While working in a Santa Monica California workshop established by Knoll in 1989, Frank Gehry began experimenting with a new approach to material and structural composition.  Inspired by the woven construction of apple crates he had played with as a child, Gehry began to weave thin strips of wood into fluid, lightweight forms.  Three years later, his ground breaking collection of laminated maple chairs and tables was introduced at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.  Gehry's Face Off Cafe Table is stamped with the Knoll Studio logo, Frank Gehry's signature and the date of production.
